Pests of the Month

November

Bees

Again, bees are in hibernation but can awaken during winter months with the warmth of a home. Remember, unlike yellow jackets and hornets, they do not leave their hive but hibernate in their originalhome, feed on their honey and live through the winter in a slower metabolic form. They will again bring on spring with thousands of bees, averaging 50,000 withthe start of new weather next spring.

Wasps/Hornets/Yellow Jackets

By now with the first frost, wasps, hornets and yellow jackets have left there nests and are in full hibernation. Remember, hibernation is a slowing down of the metabolic state, not a full sleep. If you are rummaging in your attic for your holiday items and there is heat up there, it is very possible to stumble onto some sluggish wasps roaming around. Every one that you snatch up is one less nest next spring. Thisconcept of awakening from the hibernation state is also possible if they wasp are hibernating in wall voids. If you turn up your heat as well as have a light on at night, these insects can possibly awaken and walk toward the light. If you notice a large number creep into your living space during winter months, its time to contact us for some alternative methods aside from waiting till spring.
